About The Job

Join the City of Gardner as the Building Commissioner, a pivotal role under the direction of the Mayor. In this position, you will enforce the Massachusetts State Building Code and local zoning regulations, ensuring safe and compliant building practices throughout the city. You will manage the Building Department, oversee facility operations, and play a key role in maintaining the integrity of our community's structures. Your expertise will guide the implementation of building standards, contributing to the safety and welfare of Gardner's residents.

Job Responsibilities

Enforce the Massachusetts State Building Code and City Zoning Laws, Review and process building permit applications, Conduct inspections of construction sites for compliance, Issue Certificates of Occupancy as required, Investigate code violations and issue corrective notices, Perform annual inspections of various facilities for safety compliance, Manage the maintenance of City Hall and other municipal buildings, Prepare and oversee department budgets and financial reports, Supervise building department staff and coordinate training, Recommend permit fees to the Mayor and City Council, Perform miscellaneous duties assigned by the Mayor.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in building construction or design or five years of relevant experience, Certification as a Building Commissioner by the Board of Building Regulations and Standards, Thorough knowledge of the International Building Code (2015 Edition) and Energy Stretch Code, General understanding of fire prevention and safety regulations, Advanced degree in a related field (preferred), Experience in municipal building code enforcement (preferred), Familiarity with accessible design standards in compliance with M.G.L. § 13A of c. 32 (preferred).

Preferred Skills

Proficient in Microsoft Windows and building code software, Knowledge of building materials and construction methods, Familiarity with inspection procedures and regulations, Strong communication skills, Ability to effectively manage and lead a team, Excellent problem-solving capabilities, In-depth understanding of state and local building codes, Knowledge of zoning laws and regulations, Experience in public safety and compliance inspections.
