About The Job

Join the Town of Needham as a Building Commissioner and play a vital role in leading the Building Department. This full-time position, reporting directly to the Deputy Town Manager, is essential for ensuring compliance with building codes, energy regulations, and Town zoning bylaws. Job Responsibilities

Review construction plans and specifications for compliance with MA and Needham building codes, Perform field inspections to ensure adherence to approved plans and laws, Issue notices or orders for unsafe conditions and ensure public safety, Establish and manage the Building Department's operating and capital budgets, Maintain official application and permit records while responding to inquiries, Participate in hiring and performance reviews of departmental staff, Oversee the permit application process and service delivery, Serve on relevant boards and committees as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification as an Inspector of Buildings / Building Commissioner under 780 CMR 110.R7, Valid MA Driver's License, 7-10 years of construction and supervisory experience, Bachelor's Degree in construction management, architecture, engineering or related field, Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience providing necessary knowledge and skills.

Preferred Skills

Knowledge of zoning bylaws, building codes, and inspection protocols, Proficiency in standard office equipment and relevant software for inspections and record-keeping, Excellent communication skills for diverse stakeholder engagement, Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, Ability to manage multiple projects effectively, Understanding of conservation and historic preservation concepts.
