About The Job

Join the Town of Falmouth as a full-time Deputy Building Commissioner, playing a vital role in safeguarding the community’s safety and welfare. In this key position, you will support the Building Division in ensuring compliance with Massachusetts state building codes, Architectural Access Board regulations, and local zoning bylaws. This full-time role, based at Falmouth Town Hall and in the field, offers a competitive salary and benefits, with the opportunity for professional growth within a supportive municipal environment. Working hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with occasional overtime required.

Job Responsibilities

Assist the Building Commissioner in managing and supervising Building Division operations, Manage the Building Division in the absence of the Building Commissioner, Analyze, apply, interpret, and enforce Town zoning bylaws and special permit regulations, Conduct field inspections on residential and commercial properties for compliance, Review applications under Chapter 184 of the Falmouth Town Code, issue permits, and enforce violations, Investigate complaints regarding zoning violations and maintain compliance records, Act as a liaison to various boards and commissions, Attend after-hours meetings as required, Perform additional related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in building construction, design, planning, or related field, Minimum of 5 years of experience in building supervision, Certification as a Local Inspector by BBRS, Massachusetts Certified Building Official (MCBO) or willingness to obtain within 12 months, Valid Construction Supervisor’s License (CSL), Valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator's license, Availability for after-hour meetings and weekend work, Knowledge of building permit applications and zoning bylaws.

Preferred Skills

Thorough knowledge of the Massachusetts Building Code, Familiarity with building construction methods and materials, Understanding of plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and fire prevention standards, Strong interpersonal and customer service abilities, Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, Ability to enforce regulations tactfully and impartially, Experience with zoning bylaw interpretation and enforcement, Competency in conducting field inspections and site analyses.
