About The Job

The Town of Norfolk is actively seeking a dedicated and qualified Part-Time Local Building Inspector to join our team. This crucial role, reporting directly to the Building Commissioner, entails overseeing compliance with the Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR) and local zoning bylaws. The ideal candidate will work 20 hours per week in a permanent position, contributing to the safety and integrity of our community's building practices.

Job Responsibilities

Conduct thorough plan reviews, issue permits, perform inspections on new and existing residential and occasional commercial buildings, investigate code violations and complaints, enforce building and zoning regulations, provide responsive support to property owners, contractors, and the public, maintain accurate records and documentation related to inspections and permits.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years of experience in building construction supervision, valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, Construction Supervisor License, BBRS/BOCC Local Inspector certification (or ability to obtain within 18 months), knowledge of advanced building codes and regulations, experience with community engagement and public education related to building standards.

Preferred Skills

In-depth knowledge of Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR), familiarity with mechanical, energy, and accessibility codes, ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering plans, strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to explain technical requirements clearly, sound judgment and tact in code enforcement, familiarity with zoning bylaws, land use permitting processes, proficiency in office software and mobile devices, basic administrative skills, physical ability to perform inspections in various construction environments.
