About The Job

Join the City of Somerville as the Superintendent of Inspectional Services, where you will lead a dedicated team of inspectors across building, plumbing/gas, electrical, health, and weights and measures sectors. In this pivotal role, you will ensure compliance with municipal laws and regulations, effectively promoting public safety and community well-being. This position requires availability for 24-hour call, reflecting the city's commitment to its residents.

Job Responsibilities

Manage and coordinate a multidisciplinary team across Building, Health, and Weights and Measures divisions, Create and implement comprehensive department policies and procedures, Evaluate and make strategic decisions regarding departmental budgetary concerns, Prepare and oversee the annual operating budget for the department, Interpret building and zoning regulations for stakeholders, Report to the Mayor on public health and safety code enforcement issues, Lead the Neighborhood Impact Team to address problem properties, Engage with business owners, residents, and officials regarding projects and concerns, Advocate for the department’s proposals before the City Council and community groups, Oversee the use of CitizenServe software for licensing and permitting.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, 10+ years of experience in municipal government or inspectional services/code enforcement, Construction Supervisor’s License, Certification as a Building Commissioner according to 780 CMR R7 and the Massachusetts State Board of Building Regulations and Standards, willingness to obtain certification.

Preferred Skills

Knowledge of municipal building, zoning, plumbing/gas, mechanical, and electrical codes, Proficiency in inspection practices and regulatory compliance, Experience with permitting software, Strong communication skills (oral and written), Excellent organizational abilities, Problem-solving aptitude, Ability to work independently and manage crises, Understanding of public health and safety regulations, Familiarity with City of Somerville ordinances and geography, Skills in personnel management and supervision.
